Freedom
By Felix | February 29, 2008
Them take me to kpanti, I no know where I dey…,
I see a lot of people, I no know who is who,
so tay dem take me to cooler, becos of my state fees
since then my sense have correct
peace and unity.
I wish I could sing it out for you to hear, it’s the National Anthem of Country No Vex. It goes with the rhythm of Nigerian Anthem, you need to see the enthusiasm with which we used to sing it then… (lol).
Lucky break was, one of my friends who wasn’t with us when the whole incident occurred asked his mum to call a friends who worked in a different regional Police headquarters and she was kind enough to intervene on our case. She asked to see the case file, they brought us out for a while to taste the fresh air outside and then we were transferred from cell 1 to what they call the open cell. This was a bit more habitable, more rooms, but with lots of inmates too, but this time at least we had enough spaces to be able to sleep without our bodies rubbing against each other.
The inmates in the open cell on seeing us could not go through the usual drill or should I say welcome party with us, because they knew instantly we were coming from somewhere worse than they were. We were dirty and worn out from not taking bath for over three days and also not being able to lay down to sleep. That night was going to be our first night to sleep well since we got to kpanti or so I thought. I don’t know how in cell 1 we were able to manage without noticing the bed bugs that feasted on us almost throughout the night. Now it was a different case, because we had where to sleep with enough space, but the bed bugs wouldn’t budge for us to have a good night rest. And for the first time during this ordeal, I missed my comfortable bed with clean sheets at home.
After a couple of days we adjusted into the system, we were able to take bath more often now and the officer in charge of our case had become friendly, so he aided us to get stuff from outside and we had steady supplies from home now. But with all this I came to realize the true meaning of freedom, I came to value freedom, I came to appreciate the little things that I have been taking for granted for a long while.
The fact that you can wake up every day and decided where and how your day should look like. The fact that you can eat what you feel like, the fact that you can sleep on a comfortable bed and watch TV and take naps with the Air conditioner blowing cool breeze and making your rest more enjoyable. The fact that you can go to the toilet when you feel like it without having to take permission from anybody.  The fact that you could spend time with your loved ones just gist and laughing or go swimming when the weather is too hot . The fact that you could get online browse and get to read an interesting blog like this…
J (lol).
On a more serious note, I knew then that freedom was priceless and you never know this until you are in a controlled environment where everything you do on a daily bases is scripted and if you blow one of the rules, you were in trouble. As if that wasn’t bad enough our case was still highly determinant on whatever the officer in charge of the case claims to be his findings.
We live in a society where you are guilty until proven innocent and not the other way around, human rights abuse has been neglected to the point where the police man with the gun feels his is superior to you because he wears a uniform. I remember just yesterday someone came to interview us in the office on why we started the New Nigeria Club,… sorry I am deviating a bit, but as I write I realize that if nothing is done or said about these things we’ll continue dying through life saying we are living.
“My people perish for lack of knowledge ” …Hosea 4:1-6. The fault is partly ours too, because if we are aware of our rights as human beings and according to what the constitution provides for us, we’ll sue when these things happen but again I say who are you to fight the government. I have not become anti government over night neither am I saying that’s what New Nigeria club is preaching, NO. My answer to the interviewers question in one word was RESPONSIBILTY. If the government decides to be irresponsible or blind to the things that are eating our society deep into decay. It’s time we take our destinies into our own hands, it’s time we become responsible for ourselves it’s time we do the right things even if every other person around you is doing the wrong thing, because you did what is right, you might just affect one and that makes a whole lot of difference, because in the process, we become candles that light other candles.
I am saying these things today not to say the Nigerian police force is necessarily bad or good, but that as human beings, white or black, rich or poor, civilians or in the armed forces, the act of responsibility lies on all our shoulders. When we live in a society that is truly responsible, then we are indeed free.
If that is the price we have to pay for freedom now, I don’t think it’s too heavy because Freedom is indeed PRICELESS.
Peace n a fist!

Most of us can read the writing on the wall,we just assume it’s addressed to someone else cos when a man points a finger at someone else, he should remember that four of his fingers are pointing at himself.
