You are about to be scammed!

    By Felix | October 20, 2008

The Internet is revolutionizing the way we gather information, shop and do business today, turning the world into a global village, with unlimited opportunities for commercial, social and educational activities. But today, people and businesses lose millions daily to since the birth of online fraud or cybercrimes.

The convenience associated with IT and the Internet is now being exploited to serve criminal purposes causing a serious credibility and image problems due to loss suffered by consumers and investors. Computer or should I say internet-assisted crime includes e-mail scams, hacking, distribution of hostile software (viruses and worms), denial of service attacks, theft of data, extortion, fraud and impersonation and anybody can fall a victim to it.

Millions of fraud (phishing) emails are sent everyday in an attempt to steal people’s identities and break into their online accounts. The problem of online fraud will not be solved by one company, organization or government agency alone but by a community of people and groups working together to prevent phishing attacks. There are people and organizations around working on the technical part and yes they are helping to reduce the number of victims per time.

With my little experience on the streets, I have come to see that there is no one measure that will cure the menace of online fraud and we cannot say because of what is being suffered, we should go back to the dinosaur age and leave the information technology. In my own opinion, the benefits outweigh the losses, hence we should instead device means of fighting the menace.

One of the ways I have come to see to reducing this menace is through awareness of what is possible out there, because really we cannot be too careful, I’ll try as much as possible to fill you in on what I know is outside there as a new scam, so from a distance you can see it coming. The other way I know we can fight against this or reduce it is also by re-orientation of the boys out there, counseling them into knowing there are other ways to making money legit other than through scams and for avid followers of this site, I’m sure we are already aware of the street skills project, for those of you who are new to the site, when you click on the link, you’ll get to read a little about what the project is about.

Back to the article for today, I received an email a few days ago supposedly from interswitch in the email, there is a hyperlink where you click and it takes you to a site asking me to go online to update my debit card details, part of the email reads as follows; All customers are requested to register these security Plan as Unregistered ATM cards will be disabled and denied of any transaction with the cards as from the 28th of October  2008.
To register your card in this security plan  CLICK HERE.

Now if you click on the hyperlink, it takes you to a site where you are supposed to fill in your card details. Do this and you have given them access to your account, where they can make withdrawals from your account at their convenience without visiting the bank and there is no way to trace them. The email address they use is info@interswitchng.com, making it look very convincing, but if you go to interswitch website, there is a warning there about this and they are not the ones sending any of these emails.

This is an old scam, but I think it’s quite new to in this part, a few years ago and I sure till date, it used to be for credit card details, where the content of the email is almost same thing as above and believe me they do make money from this as there are always innocent people out there who are not aware of the scam and the least you can do is let them know either by emailing them to warn them or better still, email this post to your loved ones.

This scam is known as phishing, it is defined as phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by sending out emails disguised as an official e-mail from a ( fictional) bank  or masquerading as a trustworthy entity.

You’re right on point with this post and wished you elaborated more about how to encourage online businesses such as ours - to reach across to those who have a disdain for doing anything online.

For instance, our personal shopper site, http://www…..com (to advertise your site get in touch) strives to bridge the need observed in online shopping for well made and quality clothin.

Now the idea is one thing, howevr surmounting d issues of convincing people in Nigeria about anything online for commerce is very challenging however from experience, I know it’s just a matter of time.

Have you got something cooking? Spread the word ok?

There sure are numerous ways that one can be scammed, and most internet-users are quite adept at avoiding most of the ill-intentioned material that shows up. It generally works better when one is careful about taking part in new services, and maintains an appropriate level of information-providing. The look of the image that is placed with this post has a positive artistic feel.
